  • The IUD is only an inch long, T-shaped so it is very tiny and flexible. The IUD is inserted in the uterus, where it remains for 3-12 years depending on the IUD inserted.
  • One of the major pros of IUD is that it is completely and instantly reversible. It can be easily removed when you’re ready to start a family.
  • The IUD has two strings that hang through the cervix. The strings can be checked very often to make sure that the IUD remains in the position.
  • It is 100% effective. Once you insert it, the risk of getting pregnant is extremely low.
  • The Copper IUD works instantly when inserted. Also, it can stay in place and offers protection for up to 12 years.
  • It is a perfect choice as it requires low maintenance. Once inserted, it stays place for years at a time without requiring any kind of maintenance, thus it is a perfect choice for women.
  • It is also the best option for a teenage girl who is, or may become, sexually active. There is no necessity of taking timely pills, shots or other contraceptives.

Cons of IUD

  • No women can just buy an IUD from a drugstore and insert it. A specialist should insert that in place which might take a few minutes.
  • A woman may experience a cramp right after the insertion. And if a painkiller doesn’t’ offer you relief then it is better to have the OB/GYN specialist remove the IUD so you can choose another method of birth control.
  • There may be rare issues in which IUDs can “get lost” in your uterus or enter into your vagina partially or completely. Hence, a regular checkup is necessary to see the strings that hang into your vagina or not.
  • The IUD doesn’t block semen and sperm from passing into your vagina and uterus during the sexual intercourse. There may be chances of transmission of STDs during ejaculation with a sexually infected person. So, it is better to use in addition to your IUD.
  • There may be few side effects to some women such as pale skin, bleeding, sweating, cramping or fast heartbeat. It is better to contact your OB/GYN specialist right away.
